Description
Business Processes involves the application of management thinking and techniques to the provision of products and services. The production/operations function is integrated with organisational units responsible for finance, human resource management, information technology, and marketing. Specifically, production/operations management presumes knowledge of processes related to the design, control, and evaluation of production and service systems, and the relationship between these systems and management activities. Students will gain understanding of theories of management and production and service systems, the planning and control of production and service systems, and the role of management in the enhancement of production and service functions.

There are no prerequisites for this unit.
Note: Level 2 units normally assume an introductory level of prior knowledge in this area, e.g. from studying related Level 1 units or other relevant experience.

Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this unit students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the development of different approaches to the management of production systems in advanced industrial economies
- demonstrate an understanding of the current business context and how this influences the design and management of production and distribution systems
- demonstrate an understanding of management decisions relating to the development of new goods/services and of the systems that produce them
- demonstrate an understanding of the importance of quality management and lean approaches to contemporary production systems
- demonstrate an understanding of the decision-making considerations on production facilities
- demonstrate an understanding of production planning and the basics of inventory systems
- apply the knowledge gained from the unit to analyse operational issues faced by contemporary organisations producing goods and/or services.
