Description

This unit allows students to develop a range of learning skills that are vital to study success. Students work with tutors to develop competence in a range of academic areas such as critical argument, dealing with various types of written assignments, reading of academic texts, notetaking, developing a learning plan, researching, using academic sources wisely and avoiding plagiarism. This unit commences at the beginning of each Study Period and continues for 10 weeks. It is ideal for students who have limited tertiary experience or have not studied for a while, as it helps the development of fundamental academic learning skills and understandings. This is a non-award unit designed to give you the freedom to explore tertiary learning without feeling the pressure of academic records.

Learning Outcomes

Aim:

To develop student understandings and abilities in tackling tertiary studies and becoming efficient and effective learners.

Specific outcomes:

Through study of this unit you will:

  • develop an awareness of different text types (essays, reports etc) - how to read and write these;
  • develop a sense of yourself as an academic writer and how to improve your competencies in a range of areas such as referencing, researching and exam preparation;
  • read different types of texts efficiently and know how to process the information to help you develop your own arguments;
  • learn to manage your studies effectively.
