Bus and Coach Driver

Bus and Coach Drivers are responsible for safely transporting passengers to their destinations on time via set routes or on guided journeys or tours.

Duties and tasks

  • Deliver commentaries and tour information to passengers using the PA system
  • Greet customers in a friendly manner and answer queries regarding the destination of the bus and ticket prices
  • Maintain order among passengers
  • May perform minor vehicle repairs and maintain cleanliness of the bus
  • Open and close vehicle doors at safe and appropriate times
  • Pick up and drop off passengers, adhering to established locations and timetables
  • Receive bus fare and give change
  • Regulate heating, lighting and ventilation on vehicles for passenger comfort
  • Report on any delays, accidents and vehicle malfunctions
  • Use electronic equipment to issue tickets

Working conditions

Bus and Coach Drivers usually work in shifts, which includes weekends, public holidays, early mornings and late nights. They are constantly in contact with the public and sometimes have to deal with stressful situations such as difficult passengers, heavy traffic and poor weather conditions.
