Divers work underwater at shallow or deep levels for commercial and law enforcement purposes. They may work for professional, scientific, technical, and tourism industries. They must have special diving certifications and adhere to high levels of safety in the workplace.

Duties and tasks

  • Adhere to high levels of safety measures and precautions
  • Check, install, fix or remove equipment and structures underwater for commercial purposes; operate machinery located underwater
  • Conduct scientific research, document and photograph underwater marine life or health and safety studies; lead tourist or professional tours on diving excursions
  • Conduct underwater tests and samples, especially from oil rigs and photograph damages or repairs needed in underwater structures
  • Operate equipment and handheld tools such as hydraulic devices, tools to cut and wield steel and underwater pipelines, and drilling devices
  • Use a variety of diving tools and equipment including masks and self-contained underwater breathing apparatuses
  • Work with stakeholders to locate lost or damaged cargo, structures or missing persons

Working conditions

Divers work underwater, in sometimes dark environments with heavy and bulky equipment and must feel their way around to understand their surroundings. This is a somewhat physically demanding job due to swimming and fixing and operating equipment below the surface. They may work directly for companies or be employed for fixed-term projects, and may have little work for months at a time.
