Sales Representative

A Sales Representative plays an important role in the economic life of any company. The role of the Sales Representative is to sell the goods and services of a business either to retailers or wholesalers. In this regard, these individuals work closely with customers to outline the functionality of different products and answer customer and prospective customer questions.

Duties and tasks

  • Arranging for repeat orders
  • Following up with customers after a purchase in order to maintain good lines of communication
  • Giving customers and prospective customers pricing and other information about products
  • Interacting with customers and prospective customers
  • Learning about existing products and new products that are being sold
  • Meeting face to face or talking on the phone
  • Watching for industry developments including developments from competitors

Working conditions

Working conditions can vary a great deal since they work in a vast number of different industries. Sales representatives often need to cover a wide area or territory, and this means travel and time away from home. When Sales representatives are not engaged in longer trips, they will often still need to travel daily to interact with customers and prospective customers. Their time in the office is largely spent on the phone with customers, emailing customers or catching up on paperwork.
