Pharmacy Sales Assistant

Pharmacy Sales Assistants assist pharmacists by selling, processing, and retrieving prescriptions for customers. They also stock drugs, merchandise, and supplies while following strict standards. Pharmacy sales assistants interact directly with customers.

Duties and tasks

  • Answer incoming calls, aid customers, answer questions as they arise
  • Label prescriptions as required by law
  • Prepare third-party insurance claims
  • Retrieves prescriptions for pharmacists/customers
  • Stocks empty prescriptions on shelves as required
  • Works cash register at the pharmacy and takes payments from customers

Skills required

  • A pharmacy assistance license is often required, as are other trainings/certifications
  • Basic computer skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • No formal education is necessary
  • Previous pharmacy experience or training is preferred

Working conditions

Pharmacy Sales Assistants work 8-10 hour days and often work more than the typical 40 hours a week. Most of these hours are spent standing. Pharmacy sales assistants are separated slightly from customers, but pharmacies can still be toxic environments where they are exposed to various illnesses.
