Optometrist and Orthoptist
Optometrists and Orthoptists diagnose, manage and treat conditions and diseases pertaining to the human eye. Optometrists prescribe corrective lenses and provide treatment. Orthoptists specialise in treating incorrect eye movements such as "lazy eye".
Duties and tasks
- Advises patients on eye care
- Prescribes medication to treat eye infections or diseases
- Prescribes therapeutic procedures to correct vision
- Prescribes, supplies, fits and adjusts eyeglasses and contact lenses
- Provides pre- and post-operative care for patients undergoing eye surgery
- Uses observation, instruments and pharmaceutical agents to examine eyes
Skills required
- A Doctor of Optometry degree
- Analyse and evaluate vision examination results
- Good people skills
- Pays attention to details
- Uses clinical problem solving techniques
Working conditions
Optometrists and Orthoptists work in offices that are clean, well-lighted and comfortable. Most Optometrists and Orthoptists work 40 hours a week and may be required to work weekends or evenings. Orthoptists are often employed by hospitals.Professional associations / Industry information
