Occupational & Environmental Health Professional

Occupational & Environmental Health Professionals develop, review, implement and evaluate procedures to assess the environmental and occupational health of an organisation. These professionals conduct inspections and enforce compliance with the laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals.

Duties and tasks

  • Collects samples of hazardous materials
  • Conducts audits at hazardous waste sites and participates in investigations
  • Conducts safety classes and educational programs, such as "right-to-know" programs
  • Develops and implements occupational and environmental management plans
  • Investigates the adequacy of exhaust equipment, lighting, temperature, etc. that could affect an employees health or work performance
  • Maintains and updates emergency response plans
  • Records and investigates injuries and malfunctioning equipment to identify causes and to determine how such accidents can be prevented in the future

Skills required

  • Background in chemistry, biology, physics and math
  • Good with detailed work
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Strong communicator
  • Training in occupational health, safety or related field

Working conditions

Occupational & Environmental Health Professionals work in a variety of environments, thus the person must be willing to travel. Many Occupational & Environmental Health Professionals work long and irregular hours and may be employed in the public or private sector.
