Security Officers and Guard

Security Officers and Guards ensure that organisations and individuals are secure. Their job is to monitor buildings and individuals to prevent crime. Investigating situations for clients and preparing evidence for court can also be part of the job. Security Officers and Guards will apprehend suspects and report what they see to the police.

Duties and tasks

  • Guarding against fire hazard, machine errors and malfunctions, leaky pipes and unlocked doors
  • Handling security and order at venues with large groups of people
  • Keeping people from unauthorised entry to property
  • Looking into theft and other crimes
  • Making sure that cash and valuables are safe
  • Providing visitors to facilities with security passes
  • Watching for security breaches

Skills required

  • Accurately conveying details to other individuals
  • Considering and seeking to improve ones own performance as well as that of other individuals
  • Reacting to others actions and changing actions accordingly
  • Strong communication skills
  • Thinking critically and using logic in order to find solutions to issues that arise

Working conditions

The environment in which Security Guards work can vary. This can include stores, offices and public buildings. They often work weekends and public holidays. These workers may spend many hours standing and, in that regard, the job can be physically demanding.
