Engineer (Civil)

Civil Engineers work on large-scale public works and other infrastructure projects. They may design and build dams, roads, airports, bridges, sewer systems, pipelines, and other massive undertakings. They are also required to carry out such tasks as testing likely building sites for project viability, drawing up budgets and funding schemes for projects, and engineering traffic and transportation schemes.

Duties and tasks

  • Coordinating labour and delivery of materials
  • Designing sound structural foundations
  • Designing structures, buildings, and facilities to ensure they are built soundly and do not collapse
  • Drafting drawings and blueprints for large-scale projects
  • Estimating budgets and necessary manpower for specific projects
  • Testing soil and rock samples to determine the practicality of sites for projects

Working conditions

Civil Engineers often draw up their plans in offices, either in those of firms geared specifically for engineering or as part of an engineering department of a larger firm. Once project construction begins, however, Civil Engineers are often required to be on site to ensure everything is running smoothly and to code.
