English Teacher (as a Second Language)

English as a Second Language Teachers (often abbreviated to ESL teachers) work with students of all ages whose primary language is not English. They teach grammar, speaking, and writing skills, as well as more nuanced concepts like idioms and slang.

Duties and tasks

  • Acting as a liaison between English learners and the broader community
  • Emphasising correct English diction and pronunciation
  • Imparting knowledge of the English language to students individually, in small groups, and in classroom settings
  • Introducing students to Australian culture, activities, and customs
  • Planning and implementing English language curriculum
  • Teaching age-appropriate English vocabulary
  • Working with students to improve English grammar

Working conditions

ESL teachers often work in classrooms, either within public or private schools or in community centre's or governmental offices. They may also work in a tutoring setting, in which case they may be required to visit private homes.
