Binder, Finisher and Screen Printer

Binders, Finishers and Screen Printers are responsible for collating and finishing printed materials and binding books, newspapers, magazines and other printed publications either automatically with machines or by hand.

Duties and tasks

  • Assemble printed material using folding machines and paper guillotines ready for binding
  • Finish and decorate printed products using stencils
  • Formulate pastes to bind books by hand and glue and/or sew pages together
  • Operate binding and finishing equipment
  • Perform regular maintenance on screens and presses
  • Restore damaged bindings
  • Review prints to determine correct settings including coloured inks and program accordingly
  • Screen print electrode material using electronic reproduction and photographic equipment
  • Stack printed materials onto racks to dry and unstack dry materials
  • Use equipment to enclose printed materials within envelopes, newspapers and magazines

Working conditions

Binders, Finishers and Screen Printers may work regular business hours, however some work shifts and/or overtime to accommodate printing deadlines. As such, they also have to be able to handle stress and pressure. They may work in warehouses or factories and be required to operate machinery and stand on their feet for long periods of time.
