Railway Track Worker

Railway Track Workers perform routine or mechanical work associated with railroad systems. They lay and repair track and install, monitor, and repair associated equipment such as signals and railway arms.

Duties and tasks

  • Clearing ground to make way for future railway track
  • Cutting metal for rails
  • Laying down rails and securing them in place
  • May sometimes include subway or tramway installation and maintenance as well
  • Performing maintenance on track and associated equipment as needed
  • Stamping earth to lay a solid foundation for track

  • Troubleshooting and repair capabilities

Working conditions

Railway Track Workers may work outside when performing duties such as clearing and laying track for traditional outdoor trains. They may also work in city centres, such as for tramways, or underground, for subways or commuter trains.
