Metal Fitter and Machinist

Metal Fitters and Machinists work with already finished and fabricated metals. They assemble metal into consumer products and operate machines to shape metal into desired products.

Duties and tasks

  • Assembling individual metal parts into finished products
  • Measuring metal parts and products with instruments to determine accuracy and quality
  • Monitoring machinery and equipment and making minor repairs as needed
  • Operating machinery to cut, shape, bore, drill, and bend metal parts
  • Studying patterns, drawings, plans, and blueprints to determine the nature of the work at hand

  • Ability to manipulate and control dials, switches, and gauges
  • Active listening skills
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Keen judgment and decision-making abilities
  • Knowledge of the properties of metals

Working conditions

Metal Fitters and Machinists typically work in factories or workshops. They sometimes work in repair shops (automotive, electronic, etc) or they may work on a freelance basis from their homes or private offices.
