Building and Construction Manager

Building and Construction Managers are responsible for planning, executing and directing the construction of a variety of projects including civil engineering projects and large scale building projects such as housing developments, hospitals, factories and office blocks.

Duties and tasks

  • Ensure adherence to strict building regulations, codes or practice and legislation
  • Establish and plan appropriate construction techniques
  • Liaise with technical professionals such as architects and engineers regarding design objectives
  • Monitor project progress to ensure strict time and budgetary constraints are met
  • Organise the supply of materials, equipment and labour
  • Prepare tender documents, contract bidding, negotiation and sub-contractor selection
  • Read and analyse architectural drawings and plans and determine project costs and timelines
  • Responsible for quality control, material purchasing and organising payment to contractors
  • Submit plans to local authorities and organise building inspections
  • Supervise construction sites, sub-contractors and large crews of labourers

Working conditions 

Most Building and Construction Managers work regular business hours, however some overtime may be required at busy times. Whilst they are typically office based, Building and Construction Managers spend a lot of their time visiting building and construction sites to supervise projects.
