Child and Youth Residential Carer

Child and Youth Residential Carers provide specialized care and supervise the children residing in correctional and childcare facilities or other types of refuges and shelters. They develop and implement programs and activities for the children in the facilities as well as supervise day to day tasks such as proper hygiene routines, eating meals and keeping their areas neat and tidy. Child and Youth Residential Carers must also see to the safety and well-being of the residents and provide emotional support to the children.

Duties and tasks

  • Complete disciplinary reports and offer remedies for the problem
  • Create and develop programs for the residents
  • Develop and oversee activities created for the development of the children's social, emotional, physical and mental well-being
  • Enforce the rules of the residential facility
  • Ensure that the children are awakened on time, fed and ready for the days events
  • Ensure that the facility is secure
  • Maintain order and proper behavior
  • Provide emotional support to the residents
  • Supervise hygienic routines

Working conditions

Child and Youth Residential Carers usually work in residential care facilities or juvenile correction and detainment institutions. Residential childcare facilities offer a much more comfortable work atmosphere, while correctional institutions are often significantly more structured, disciplined and have fewer creature comforts. Since the children require round the clock supervision, the carers will be required to work a variety of shifts as well as holidays.
