Child Care Centre Manager

Child Care Centre Managers perform a host of diverse duties including planning, organising and coordinating programs and activities for the children at their establishment. They also work closely with child carers, parents and other staff members. Specialised Child Care Centre Managers may work in before or after school facilities, day care centres or establishments offering holiday or vacation care for children.

Duties and tasks

  • Creating and implementing programs and activities to promote the children's social, physical, mental and emotional well-being
  • Developing rules and consequences to ensure proper behavior and safety
  • Ensuring government regulations and standards are met
  • Handling the accountancy of the facility
  • Hiring and supervising staff
  • Interacting with the parents as to their children's development and behavior
  • Maintaining order within the establishment
  • Maintaining the children's records
  • Ordering products needed for the day to day running of the centre
  • Overseeing that the facility is safe and secure for the children, staff and visitors
  • Providing and supervising the care of the children

Working conditions

Child Care Centre Managers usually work in comfortable, safe and tidy surroundings, however they can be noisy and hectic as well. This position is often stressful as it involves complying with government regulations and dealing with many staff members. Children and parents, along with handling the financial aspects of facilities, can be problematic at times. Managers regularly begin their days well before the children arrive and stay well past the time that they leave. Much work is taken home with them to ensure that all deadlines are met.
