Library Assistant

Library Assistants assist Librarians in the proper organisation of library materials. They may assist in checking out material and processing intake of library items, as well as re-shelving resources. They should be able to work in organised, quiet environments performing repetitive tasks.

Duties and tasks

  • Assist library members to access books and other online resources and navigate library classification systems
  • Check out library materials to members and record as well as inform of expected due dates and library policies
  • Identify damaged or overdue materials and issue fines and notices
  • Maintain library database and classification systems
  • Organise and shelve returned library materials to correct areas
  • Retrieve requested items and prepare orders for transfer or pick-up
  • Support Librarians with any additional tasks to uphold the overall quality and functioning of the library

Working conditions

Library Assistants typically work Mondays to Fridays or on rotating schedules based on library hours of operation. They may have to work occasional weekends when the library is open. They work in library settings with computers and organised shelves of materials, performing some physical work by manually restocking and organising books and other resources.
