Housekeeper

Housekeepers are employed by businesses, commercial enterprises, governmental agencies, and private individuals. They are required to clean and maintain the facility to which they have been assigned.

Duties and tasks

  • Cleaning curtains and other window treatments, as well as the windows themselves
  • Cooking meals and going grocery shopping may be required at times
  • Doing laundry
  • Dusting and polishing hard surfaces
  • Stripping and remaking beds
  • Sweeping, mopping, and polishing floors; vacuuming and shampooing carpets
  • Washing and drying dishes and other kitchen maintenance work

Skills required

  • Ability to perceive when people are in need of help or tasks need doing
  • Ability to work well with hands
  • Active listening skills 
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to interact well with other individuals
  • Time management and organisation

Working conditions

Housekeepers are employed in a variety of locations. They may work for a housekeeping agency that sends them out on different jobs, or they may work in-house in an office, business, or other facility. They can often be found in private residences as well.
