About this subject
Note: Students may only enrol in this subject (TAS-KPZ9001) if they are admitted to the Undergraduate Certificate in Sustainable Living. All other students should enrol in TAS-KPZ001.
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should gain understanding of:
- The power of the scientific method in addressing questions
- Plant structure and function
- Plant taxonomy and identification
- Basic soil chemistry and biota, how to test your soil, and how to adjust it
- Factors influencing plant reproduction and propagation
- How to identify plants
- How do plants grow?
- What do plants need from the soil?
- How do plants know when to grow?
- Shaping the way plants grow
- How do we multiply plants?
Science of Gardening is a foundation-level subject offered as part of a Diploma of Sustainable Living to provide you with an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge for an enhanced appreciation of the processes occurring in your garden – in the plants and in the soil and microorganisms it contains. This subject introduces you to some techniques for identifying plants, an understanding of how they grow, how to examine your soil and how to determine nutrient deficiencies in your plants.
