About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, the student should be able to:
- Explain the functions of ports and range of port operations (in relation to both infrastructure and services) and their implications for the role of port management
- Explain how port administrative and management structures have evolved and the implications for the role of port authorities
- Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of port operations and management from the aspect of logistics and supply chain management

- Examine major challenges facing ports and generate strategies for managing them

This subject aims to expose you to contemporary management practices in ports. The design of this subject is suited to meet the needs of students at different stages in their careers and at different levels in their organisations. You will learn about the commercial functions of ports, port governance, the role of ports in global supply chains, port investment, finance and pricing, port performance management, port competition and marketing, port environmental management, regulatory framework of ports, technology and human capital in ports, and strategic port planning. Challenges related to these issues faced by ports and relevant strategies adopted for responding to them are also included.
