About this subject
On successful completion of this Unit the learner will be able to:
- Identify the methodologies (historical and contemporary) for teaching and learning English as a second or foreign language (TESOL)
- Consolidate your understanding of the complex ways in which second language acquisition (SLA) and TESOL methodologies interact via your critical appraisal of contemporary TESOL literature.
- Critique, compare and evaluate a range of contemporary teaching and learning methodologies for the TESOL context.
- Plan detailed classroom materials and resources that are culturally and linguistically appropriate for a specific TESOL context using a range of TESOL methodologies
- Enhance your academic writing skills.

This unit explores a range of approaches to English language learning and teaching including teaching strategies and techniques for teaching reading, writing, speaking and listening. The unit will also study the nature of the second language teaching methodology in a range of contexts through the identification, description and critique of the underlying principles of TESOL methodology. Topics include the socio-cultural context of second language teaching, focusing on cultural, historical and intergroup issues; different approaches to second language learning and teaching, the planning and evaluation of units of work, strategies, techniques and resources for learning.
