About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, the student should be able to:
- Discuss fundamental knowledge of marine sciences relevant to maritime engineering.
- Describe the different types of marine crafts and structures that suit their operational role(s) and explain the different systems required to operate them.
- Explain the concepts and apply basic tools in project management in conjunction with the recognition of the importance of teamwork.
- Recognise the importance of ethics and sustainable engineering practice and argue their implications within the roles of engineers in the society.

- 3. Conduct of Wave Lab
- 4. Maritime Engineering (Ships): bulk carries general cargo ships, oil tankers, LNG and chemical carries, passenger ships, small crafts. Class and professional societies.
- 5. Maritime Engineering (Offshore structures): TLP, Spar, Semisubmersibles, fixed structures, jack-ups, FPSO/FLNG, Project scheduling and control.
- 6. Maritime Engineering: Marine diesel engines, steam and gas turbines.
- 7. Maritime Engineering: teamwork and the conduct of Engine Lab.
- 8. Auxiliary Machinery: lube oil systems, cooling systems, fuel oil systems, and ballast and bilge systems.
- 9. Auxiliary Machinery: lube oil systems, cooling systems, fuel oil systems, and ballast and bilge systems.
- 10. Auxiliary Machinery: steering gear, propulsion systems control systems, electrical systems, anchoring and mooring systems.
- 11. Maritime Technology: deepwater drilling systems, subsea systems, underwater technology. Advanced technology in project management. Ethics in engineering.
- 12. Maritime Technology: Engine room simulators, dynamic positioning systems, autonomous technology. Technology and economy.
This subject provides an introduction to the ocean environment and the role of maritime engineers in the design of maritime infrastructure. The subject covers essential elementary knowledge of marine sciences, types of marine crafts and maritime structures, marine systems, and ocean renewable energy technology. The subject also introduces the student to the application of project management concepts and tools within the broader maritime engineering context.

Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
