Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming increasingly prevalent in our day-to-day lives. As a result, skilled GIS analysts are
in high demand across the workforce. The goal of this subject is to provide you with a foundational understanding of the concepts
underpinning GIS as a discipline, and aid you in developing the practical skills you need to put this knowledge into action.
Throughout the subject you will be introduced to the major types of data that are used in GIS, and how they can be used to represent a wide
variety of information in a spatially explicit way. We will explore how spatial datasets are created, how they are maintained, and how they
can be used to solve problems. We will also introduce you to the principles of cartographic design, with a focus on creating high quality
mapped outputs that clearly communicate information across a number of broad themes.
GIS by its nature is an inherently interdisciplinary field. Any phenomena or process that occurs in a spatially explicit way can be
incorporated, used, and interpreted using GIS. This subject draws from both scientific and social applications, and can provide valuable skills
to students from all degree programs.

Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
