About this subject
On completion of this subject, you will be able to:
- Access and use online military service records
- Read and analyse wartime letters and diaries
- Understand individual lives within the wider history of war, particularly in relation to Australia and Britain and World War One
- Research and write a biographical report of a person’s wartime service or experience.

Do you have a family ancestor who served as a soldier, sailor, nurse or some other position in the defence forces in the First World War? Do you have an old family war diary or set of letters in the proverbial attic? Building upon the skills in the Foundation level Family History units, Families at War introduces you to researching online military records, and most importantly to contextualising diverse experiences of war, from those who went to the front to those who stayed behind. The focus is on Australia and Britain during the First World War. Discover more about your family's military past.
Families at War is a 100-level university subject that will help you to research the experiences of an ancestor or other individual who took part in the First World War. The skills and knowledge gained will, however, help you in any further research you may wish to pursue on individuals involved in other conflicts and countries.

Single subject FAQs
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
