About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, the student should be able to:
- Reflect upon different perspectives and experiences of health and wellbeing to inform understanding of, and responses to, the identified needs of diverse population groups.
- Explain how biological, sociological, cultural, environmental and lifestyle determinants impact health and wellbeing.
- Identify and interpret the factors that guide action on the determinants of health.

In this subject you will consider how individuals, families and communities understand and experience health and wellbeing. Barriers and enablers of health and wellbeing will be explored, with emphasis placed on vulnerable, marginalised and isolated population groups. You will examine how biological, sociological, cultural, environmental and lifestyle factors determine and shape health and wellbeing across the lifespan. You will also develop an understanding of health literacy, readiness for change and the importance of effective communication in the promotion of health and wellbeing. In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.
You will be introduced to:
- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice
- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios
- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations
- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.
