About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of current concepts in leadership and management theory as it relates to health and aged care
- Communicate and reflect on own leadership and management skills in an aged care context
- Apply leadership theories to managing people in health and aged care settings
- What is the purpose of the aged care sector and individual organisations?
- Who are the stakeholders? What are their roles and responsibilities - Commonwealth, funders/$, residents, families, community, staff
- What is an aged care organisation – health and residential, medical/ sub-acute and home, clinical and supervision/day care
- What are the service models?
- Ethics, governance and service delivery in aged care
- Customer is King, Cashflow is Queen…Balancing and Integrating Service and Business Objectives and Outcomes, competitive marketplace
- Finance, modelling, and budgeting - understanding the new funding arrangements
- Structures, systems, strategies and skills for internal and external integration
- Roles, responsibilities and contribution – Boards, Executives, managers, frontline staff and volunteers
- CQI Systems
- Transformational leadership for aged care
- Critical knowledge frameworks and skills – decision making, conflict resolution, supervision, mentoring, HRM, change management, CQI
- Transparency: performance metrics, organisational and clinical outcomes and reporting

This unit will critically examine the processes and activities to identify, monitor and improve key elements of aged care organisational functioning, within complex health networks. A review and critique of governance arrangements, including accountability and transparency requirements for staff, managers and boards will be undertaken. Requirements for performance metrics, organisational and clinical outcomes and reporting arrangements will be debated. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.
