About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Critically analyse different organisational structures
- Appraise the policy, reforms and system dynamics in the aged care sector
- Critically analyse aged care governance
- The Australian aged care context
- What is health care? What does it mean, how does it shape a person’s life and expectations?
- What is the aged care sector? Size, $, population trends, service needs
- Who are the stakeholders? Commonwealth, funders/$, residents, families, community, staff
- What is an aged care organisation – health and residential, medical/ sub-acute and home, clinical and supervision/day care
- Sector strategic insights, trends, and predictions
- Issues and challenges - person centred aged care, religion, sexuality, disability, ethnicity
- History and the future: past problems and the critical need for reforms
- A short history of everything - where has the sector come from? What have been the defining forces that have shaped it
- The problems in the sector including business service models/ business practice
- The Reform Commission/ Inquiry – what was it, why is it so important
- Key lessons and required changes to the sector - coming to grips with the current and emerging Commonwealth Government Aged Care Reforms…… Understanding the New Reforms

This unit will critically assess the knowledge, structures and systems required to effectively govern, organise and manage residential aged care organisations. The aged care sector will be reviewed within the Australian healthcare context, its specific historical trajectory of development and need for reform will be investigated. Governance arrangements incorporating legislation, regulation and systems for aged care organisations will be examined. The challenge of addressing multiple stakeholders and how they interact with each other will be explored. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.
