At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- critique the relationship between ideology and practice in material culture studies
- compare and contrast approaches to the Indigenous, historical and modern material culture fields
- develop knowledge of the ethical and conceptual basis of material culture analysis
- explore archival material culture
- analyse the meanings and presentation of material culture.

The student will demonstrate advanced understanding through the application of knowledge and reflection in authentic problem solving in modern material culture analysis, theory and practice in material culture, Indigenous material culture, historical archaeology, ethics and sensitivities, online material culture, interpretation of material culture, cross-disciplinary methodologies and material culture of different places of meaning.
