About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- explain the fundamentals of materials in manufacturing and mechanics in metal cutting processes
- evaluate major manufacturing processes and related tooling and be able to apply them into practice
- fabricate sheet metal products through sheet metalworking operations
- explain, analyse, predict and prevent material failures in primary manufacturing processes
- select, analyse and design metal deformation processes.

The subject provides knowledge of the mechanics of forming and joining processes for a wide range of industrial applications for manufacturing and design decision making. Throughout the subject a variety of manufacturing techniques are covered including metal cutting techniques, cutting tools and materials, mechanics and economics of metal cutting, use of jigs and fixtures for machining and joining processes.
Stress, strain analysis and mechanical properties of materials applied to metal forming processes are explored. Other processes investigated include sheet metal forming, deep drawing, stretch forming and bending, forging, rolling and extrusion processes, tooling for blanking, bending and forging as well as basic casting techniques.

Additional requirements
- Attendance requirements - This subject has a 2 day on-campus attendance requirement. The on-campus schedule for Study Period 1 is Tuesday 21 April - Wednesday 22 April 2020.
- Equipment requirements - Audio headset with microphone are required to access weekly consultation and help desk facilities.

The student must obtain a greater than 40% mark in the examination to pass the subject.
