Engineering Materials

About this subject

  • At the completion of this subject students will be able to:

    1. describe the atomic structure of elements and the nature of bonding and its relationship to properties
    2. describe the characteristics of the major groups of engineering materials: metals/alloys; polymers; ceramics and composites; and explain their behaviour under stress
    3. give an account of the strengthening mechanisms in both metals and non-metals
    4. identify common failure types and evaluate methods of failure prevention
    5. demonstrate a knowledge of the principles of corrosion and their methods of prevention
    6. describe basic crystal structures and mechanisms of diffusion
    7. describe the mechanical properties of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites.

Entry requirements

To enrol in this subject, you must be admitted into a degree.

Prior study

To help set you up for success before you start this subject, we suggest completing or having equivalent knowledge in:

Additional requirements

  • Equipment requirements - Audio headset with microphone are required to access weekly consultation and help desk facilities.

Study load

0.125 EFTSL
This is in the range of 10 to 12 hours of study each week.

Equivalent full time study load (EFTSL) is one way to calculate your study load. One (1.0) EFTSL is equivalent to a full-time study load for one year.
