Foundations of Epidemiology and and Introduction to Biostatistics

About this subject

  • On completion of this subject students should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:

    1. Explain what epidemiology is, relate the historical evolution of epidemiology, and describe the concept of a population in epidemiology.

    2. Explain a range of measures of occurrence and measures of association and interpret these associations to determine causality. 

    3. Define and describe descriptive versus inferential statistics and interpret simple descriptive and inferential statistics with reference to an epidemiological issue.

    4. Describe and explain major types of study designs used in epidemiological research, identify potential sources of error (including bias, chance, and confounding) and provide an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of each study type. 

    5. Describe how epidemiology and biostatistics may be applied to contemporary and real-world public health challenges, including emerging infectious diseases and environmental health issues.

To enrol in this subject you must be accepted into one of the following degrees:

  • UND-PES-GCE-2023 - Graduate Certificate in Public and Environmentally Sustainable Health

  • Other requirements - Class is online in the evening, 6pm - 9pm.
