About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- identify and demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student engagement for learning (GTSD 3.5.1, 4.1.1);
- develop classroom observation skills, within the context of student engagement for learning and processes of timely and appropriate feedback, and apply this learning, through critical reflection, to articulate implications for future practice (GTSD 4.1.1, 5.2.1, 6.2.1);
- demonstrate an understanding of the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and critical reflective practice as a form of teacher professional learning, its application to beliefs of teaching to construct an emerging personal philosophy of education (GTSD 6.1.1, 6.2.1);
- interpret professional learning data to consider the rationale for continued professional learning and the implications for improved student learning (GTSD 6.4.1);
- identify and explore key concepts related to the roles of external professionals and community representatives in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice (GTSD 7.4.1); and
- demonstrate a broad understanding of knowing your students, ethical and professionalism appropriate for a wide range of classroom settings and familiarisation with legal and ethics requirements as a teacher (GTSD 1.1.1, 1.6.1, 7.1.1, 7.2.1).
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
In this subject, teacher education students will be introduced to foundational theories and principles, and a range of skills and strategies, for effective and evidence-informed student and teacher learning. They will build an understanding of how to liaise with communities, external professionals and stakeholders to enhance and broaden their professional knowledge and practice. Key aspects of unit content include a proactive approach to student and community engagement; quality feedback processes; critical reflective practice; and the guiding framework, the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. The subject includes 10 days of online Professional Experience which students are required to complete.
