Storytelling and Genre Writing
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- identify the principles and techniques of storytelling in a selected genre;
- apply techniques of storywriting effectively in developing a concept for a short writing project;
- apply a working understanding of the role of reading and research in genre writing; and
- apply the principles and techniques of revision and editing appropriate to a selected genre and readership.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This subject is an introduction to writing creative narratives. It introduces students to essential storytelling techniques and provides a vocabulary for understanding the craft of constructing narratives that reflect genre conventions and reader expectations. Students learn skills in creative writing through constructing a story that is inspired by a theme, such as journeys. The subject guides students through the stages of developing an idea, designing and drafting a story, and editing. Students explore how selected authors portray places, events, characters and themes. Writing is understood as a process that draws on experience, research, craft, feedback and revision.
