Quantitative Skills with Applications
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- graph and apply exponential and logarithmic functions;
- solve exponential and logarithmic equations;
- graph and apply trigonometric functions and solve trigonometric equations;
- solve systems of linear equations using matrices;
- solve first-order recurrence relations, and
- apply arithmetic and geometric sequences and series.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects moodle site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
Mathematical models appear throughout the natural and social sciences. For example, growth of both cell populations and money can be modelled using exponential functions. In this subject, students will learn how to develop, understand and apply mathematical models, and see how the universality of mathematics connects seemingly disparate fields. Emphasis is placed on developing good mathematical intuition as well as technical problem-solving, allowing students to immediately apply the knowledge learned in this subject or continue on to the calculus-based mathematics subjects. This subject follows the Introduction to Quantitative Skills subject or NSW HSC Mathematics or equivalent.
Topics covered include functions and graphing review; exponential, logarithmic, and inverse functions and equations; trigonometric functions and equations (a unit circle approach); solving systems of linear equations using matrices; and sequences and series: solving first-order recurrence relations, arithmetic progressions, geometric progressions.
Final Examination: 2 hrs 15 mins duration. The exam will be offered online with supervision via webcam and screen sharing technology. Coordinated by UNE Exams Unit.

In 2020 the Non-Mandatory Intensive school will be held at the Armidale campus NSW. Trimester 1 dates: There is no Non-Mandatory Intensive School for Trimester 1 Trimester 2 dates: The Trimester 2 Intensive School will not be offered in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
