Introduction to Scientific Programming
About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- use technical and logical skills to develop well-structured computer programs in MATLAB;
- demonstrate the application of programs to real-world scientific problems, with students applying modelling skills learned in this subject to the physical and life sciences;
- apply current methods of data analysis and visualisation to a wide range of scientific data, including mobile and remote sensors, publically-available data, simulated data, and images; and
- critically appraise and effectively communicate results of their analyses to others.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects moodle site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This applied subject is designed for students interested in technology and scientific data modelling, but with little or no programming experience. Using a problem-based approach, students will develop programs in MATLAB that will be applied to a wide range of prevailing and emerging issues in the physical and life sciences. Fundamental programming concepts will be introduced through common techniques used in modern scientific programming, including data analysis, advanced graphs, and image analysis.
In SCI410, students will demonstrate mastery of these concepts through a final project related to their field of expertise.
Programming assessment. 10 weekly programming projects worth 5% each. These assessments must be attempted in order to pass the unit. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-3
