About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of the nature and scope of international law, including knowledge of its structure, institutions, fundamental doctrines and principles;
- use initiative and judgement to critically analyse, synthesise, evaluate and consolidate legal concepts, values and rules of international law to construct persuasive legal arguments and solutions, applying the technical vocabulary of international law to fact based problems; and
- use cognitive and creative skills to exercise critical thinking and judgement in demonstrating an understanding of the sources of International law.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
This subject aims to introduce students to the basic structure and principles of international law. The unit covers, inter alia, a selection of the following topics: development and nature of international law, subjects of international law, sources of international law, the relationship between international law and domestic law, state responsibility, jurisdiction and immunities, international economic relations, use of force, human rights, international criminal law as well as settlement of international disputes.
