About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad and coherent body of knowledge of the range of contemporary international approaches to human rights;
- apply an understanding of debates between relativistic and universalistic approaches to human rights;
- assess the significance of 'human rights' issues in relations among states, and present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas;
- analyse and evaluate major aspects of global political economy affecting international human rights; and
- demonstrate analytical skills, writing skills and conceptual abilities at a level appropriate to undergraduate study.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
The subject is a study of the politics of international human rights. It focuses on the variations in interpretation of the international human rights regime and the emphases on differing sets of rights. This will include the debates on universalism versus relativism, the relationship between human rights and 'democracy', the political economy of rights promotion and abuse, and the role of human rights in the political relations among states.
