About this subject
Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of academic research approaches and methods in a range of disciplines in Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences;
- demonstrate an understanding of the rationale, value and ethics of academic research; and
- analyse and evaluate different types of research.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
Good research is one cornerstone of academic success. Being able to engage in, and understand what good research is, regardless of the degree or major, will allow you to succeed in your studies. There are various approaches and methods involved in conducting research properly. Understanding them is important to your study at university but may also be relevant to your life outside of university, in a range of professional and community contexts. This subject introduces skills for critical and successful undergraduate research. It is a practical unit examining research purposes, methods, techniques, and ethics, across a range of disciplines. It is a valuable subject for those beginning their study and research journey in multiple areas of interest.

Single subject FAQs
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
