About this subject
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of choral and instrumental conducting techniques in a variety of contexts;
- demonstrate practical competency in conducting skills and musical leadership;
- critically evaluate the use and application of musical communication and leadership strategies as they apply in different music-making scenarios; and
- critically analyse ensemble leadership methodologies suitable for use in school music programs.
- Topics will be available to enrolled students in the subjects Learning Management System site approximately one week prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
Learning to lead and conduct an ensemble involves organisation, great communication and decision making skills, and leadership; all skills which will serve you well in your future career. Studying this subject you will develop ensemble leadership skills and conducting techniques. You will learn the theory and practice of choral and instrumental conducting as it is applied in a variety of musical contexts. You will learn to identify, assess and apply knowledge of musical communication to scenarios where musicians are required to lead an ensemble including bands, choirs, and soloists. You will investigate rehearsal preparation strategies, ensemble setup, warm-up activities and ensemble development skills. School-age development skills will also be included in this subject for teachers in training.
Assessment 1: Written assessment. 1500 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1, 3, 4;
Assessment 2: Written music leadership evaluation assessment. 1500 words. Relates to Learning Outcomes 1, 3, 4;
Assessment 3: Two practical conducting assessments. It is mandatory to pass this assessment in order to pass the unit. 2000 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcomes 2;
Assessment 4: Online group and individual ensemble leadership evaluation and mentoring activities and exercises. 600 words (equivalent). Relates to Learning Outcomes 1-4.- Written Assessment (20%)
- Written music leadership evaluation assessment (20%)
- Two practical conducting assessments (50%)
- Online group and individual ensemble leadership evaluation and mentoring (10%)
