About this subject

  • Upon completion of this subject, students will be able to:

    1. demonstrate broad knowledge of the relevant statute and case law relating to criminal law; interpret legislation relating to the criminal law and identify from that legislation the elements of the offence or defence involved;
    2. demonstrate a broad and coherent understanding of the principles of criminal law eg, burden of proof, elements of offences, identification of actus reus and mens rea, and apply those principles competently to a fact situation;
    3. critically analyse, synthesise, and consolidate their knowledge of criminal law to provide persuasive legal arguments and solutions to fact based problems and client scenarios; and
    4. produce clear, written communications demonstrating a coherent understanding of the applicable criminal law.
