About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Effectively communicate the principles of knowledge management (KM) as well as the role and place of KM in data management and knowledge-intensive organisations
- Explain the key theoretical and conceptual knowledge and frameworks of modern database management systems
- Critically evaluate the concept of BI from both a technical and a personal/organisational perspective
- Analyse the significant role of business intelligence in gaining business advantage
- Apply the knowledge gained to facilitate in-depth analysis, questioning, advising and interpreting business practices
- Apply critical and creative thinking skills to the effective use and presentation of literature in the context of specific problems.

This subject provides an understanding of the development and management of data management systems in a dynamic business environment. It will not only introduce the fundamentals of data management, but will also discuss business intelligence (BI) a key support for better business decision-making. In doing so, the subject takes into account the business dimensions, imperatives and motivations that are associated with recent advances in technology and systems. The subject also has an eye to the future and specifically regarding business sustainability and the need to address a range of Green IT issues. On completing the subject, students should be able to use the knowledge gained in order to conduct their own research in this field and to evaluate proposals from vendors and IT consultants.
