About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- define and state the relationships between basic physical quantities such as Force, work, energy, power, etc.;
- explain the physical properties governing energy production, transmission and storage;
- understand where energy is currently used, and show an appreciation of how it may be used efficiently;
- perform quantitative calculations to compare various means of energy production;
- demonstrate how even simple atmospheric models can qualitatively reveal the greenhouse effect.

This subject is intended for any student seeking a deeper understanding of the issues of energy production, transmission and usage and the effects on the environment. The science behind traditional and alternative methods of energy production will be presented, coupled with the associated science behind energy efficiency, insulation and energy transmission. There will be a brief introduction to the physics of the atmosphere and the greenhouse effect. The discussion will be informed by a working knowledge of the physical principles governing the transformation of energy from one form to another.

Single subject FAQs
Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
