About this subject
Specifically, at the end of this subject, the students should be able to:
- Technology and Application - Describe and compare current mobile technologies, their strengths and their limitations.
- Techniques and Algorithms - Explain and apply the techniques on platforms used for developing mobile applications.
- Design and implementation: Design and implement well-structured mobile applications using programming languages and standard mobile application development frameworks.
- Coding and Debugging - Demonstrate sound skills in coding and debugging program code written for mobile applications.
- Testing: Apply the fundamentals of mobile app testing, design and automate test plans for mobile applications.
- Collaborative and Team Work - Acquire a basic appreciation of what is involved in teamwork.
- Introduction, overview, history and perspectives of mobile application development
- Small device vs. PC programming: differences and limitations
- Mobile application life cycle
- Application development Platforms and their architectures including Google Android and Apple iOS
- Android application development
- iOS (iPhone and iPad) application development
This unit focuses on mobile application development using mobile development techniques and environments. Topics covered include app life cycle; small device programming; platform architecture including Google Android, Apple iOS, and Microsoft Windows Phone; web applications for mobile; cross platform development.

10% of the marks will be allocated to the demonstration of solutions to practical exercises. External students will submit electronically and receive feedback through email. 15% of the marks will be allocated to an assignment which will require the use of the materials covered, research and some self-directed study to produce a report. 35% of the marks will be based on a project where the students, through self-directed study, make use of most of the materials covered in the unit. Feedback will be provided for the assignment and project through the LMS. Finally, 40% of the marks will be the allocated to final examination.
