Subject details

What you'll learn

On successful completion of this subject you should be able to:

  1. demonstrate how to calculate a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory according to the international ISO 14064 standard
  2. estimate and report GHG emissions for entities according to national guidelines and regulations including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and calculate the associated uncertainties
  3. understand the protocols and approaches related to determining and reporting local government and regional inventories and carbon footprints
  4. explain what is meant by Life Cycle Thinking and Life Cycle Assessment
  5. understand lifecycle assessment concepts, methodologies and standards and how to appropriately apply them
  6. use LCA software to estimate the life cycle inventory of a product and present the results in a standardised format
  7. determine the lifecycle environmental performance of a particular energy technology over competing options
  8. understand how GHG inventory and lifecycle assessment are used to gain accreditation for a carbon offset, company, or product.
Topics covered
    • Greenhouse gas (GHG) and energy reporting methodologies.
    • Drivers and frameworks for national GHG inventories
    • Australian National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme (NGERS)
    • Calculations of GHG inventories and carbon footprints for local government and communities
    • Concepts and methodologies for Life-cycle assessments (LCA).

Description

This subject looks at the approaches for calculating and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories and lifecycle emissions at national, entity and even product level. The first part presents the elements of rigorous GHG and energy reporting methodologies using the Australian National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme as a case study. The second part covers the concepts and methodologies related to life cycle assessment (LCA). Its use is illustrated by examining case studies including LCA of renewable electricity, transport and oil.

Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Find out more: http://goto.murdoch.edu.au/MurdochAcademicPassport.

Assessments

The assessment for this subject comprises of the following elements: * Assignment 1: An assignment given to test student's understanding of the NGERS guidelines to calculate GHG emissions inventories at the entity level. (20%) * Assignment 2: An assignment given to test student understanding of the use of LCA tools (based on process and economic input-output) and LCA report writing. (40%) * Examination: A final, open book exam tests student competence on the application of the concepts learned in the unit. (40%) Timely feedback is provided on each of these assessment items to assist the learning process.

  • Mid-semester assignment (20%)
  • End-of-semester assignment (40%)
  • Open book timed exam (45%%)
