About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding and working knowledge of key biological terms
- Explain physiological processes in the human body starting at the genetic level and working through the biochemistry, cell and tissue functions to a physical outcome
- Outline the complex interactions between organ systems that result in homeostasis
- Apply biological concepts to a range of contemporary issues
- Find scientific articles and critically evaluate the design and conclusions of biological experiments
- Summarise key findings related to complex biological topics
- Make judgements about the validity of statements made about biological processes by academics, journalists, politicians and other commentators.

This subject deals with human biology and the interactions of humans with the rest of the living world. Topics include: human genetics, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, and evolution. Attention is paid to topics of current interest, such as emerging diseases, DNA technology, genetic engineering, cloning, and the impact of human activities on biodiversity and the biosphere. The subject is designed for students with no background in biology, however students whose area of study is biology are also encouraged to attend.

Single subjects are the individual components that make up a degree. With Open Universities Australia, you’re able to study many of them as stand-alone subjects, including postgraduate single subjects, without having to commit to a degree.
Each of your subjects will be held over the course of a study term, and they’ll usually require 10 to 12 hours of study each week. Subjects are identified by a title and a code, for example, Developmental Psychology, PSY20007.
First, find the degree that you would like to study on our website.
If that degree allows entry via undergraduate subjects, there will be information about this under the Entry Requirements section. You will find a list of 2-4 open enrolment subjects you need to successfully complete to qualify for admission into that qualification.
Once you pass those subjects, you will satisfy the academic requirements for the degree, and you can apply for entry.
