About this subject
At the completion of this subject students will be able to:
- convey an understanding of the major debates and contemporary issues raised by the study of International Political Economy
- deepen knowledge on the rise of new state and non-state global and international power actors brought about globalisation
- impart a critical understanding of the diverse impacts of global economic integration, especially on the state’s governing powers over the economy through contemporary conceptual approaches and empirical case studies
- promote a macro (big picture) perspective on economic globalisation’s impacts, which integrates theory and empirical evidence

The unit offers an advanced survey of topics in the study of International Political Economy. It is now widely understood that the pressures associated with economic openness have been intensified with the advent of economic globalisation. For some, global integration is unifying and empowering. For others it is the source of the world’s worst miseries. What are the causes and consequences of this process and how far is it likely to go in the future? Is economic globalisation the problem or the solution to the major world threats of our time? Does global integration erode the sovereignty of nation-states and diminish their usefulness to economic governance? It provides a theoretical and historical examination of economic globalisation and consideration of the role of the state and non-state actors in shaping the regional and global integration of political economies. It focuses on global economic integration to emphasise both the tendencies and countertendencies to globalisation, as well as its uneven and highly differentiated impacts.
