About this subject
On successful completion, a student will be able to:
- acquire and accurately recall historical information relating to trading cities of the Roman Near East and how they connected with the Roman and Iranian worlds
- cultivate a deeper appreciation of a range of cultural, social, religious, and political issues when dealing with sources from the past
- demonstrate an understanding of the importance of primary and secondary texts and images through analysis, expression, and argument
- conduct independent research and scholarly activity.

This subject aims to combine archaeology with history in the study of a number of key cities of the Roman Near East and how their histories aligned with the growth of long-distance trade through the area. The Silk Roads and the Frankincense Road brought great prosperity to a number of cities of the Roman East, especially Petra, Palmyra and Dura Europos. Much of the history of these cities is written from a combination of archaeological reports and literary sources. Students will be given the opportunity to learn how to evaluate archaeological evidence against extant literary sources and also to study the architectural history of the Roman Near East.
