About this subject
- Identify and analyse the characteristics of early (Romantic), Victorian, Modern and Postmodern gothic texts.
- Recognise and understand the significance of scholarly articles to the field of gothic literature.
- Understand concepts that are central to the gothic (including sensibility; the uncanny; terror and horror; masculine and feminine gothic).
- Write a clearly structured; well-researched; and well-presented essay at a third year level.

This subject offers you an introduction to the historical contexts and form of the gothic. Beginning with the key 18th century novels of Lewis and Radcliffe and ending with various 21st century incarnations of the gothic, you will explore the way in which key elements and conventions of the gothic (such as the uncanny, the vampire, masculine and feminine gothic, and the monstrous) develop over the history of the genre. You will study key works of gothic fiction alongside of their literary, televisual and filmatic, "children".
- Class presentation (5 mins) on an article concerning the gothic and written submission of the presentation (1000 words) (25%)
- Research essay (1,750 words) (45%)
- Essay (1000 words). (25%)
- Brief overview of an important gothic concept. Student to explain concept in their own words. Assessment to be completed during tutorial, week 2. (250 word equivalence) (5%)

Past La Trobe University students who have previously completed ENG2GOT (The Gothic and Its Children) and ENG3GOT (Gothic Literature and Its Children) are ineligible to enrol in this subject.
Pre-requisites: Student must have completed 30 credit points of Level one subjects.
