Relationships continue to be a central part of our everyday lives, but how are our relationships changing as a result of recent social, cultural, economic and technological transformations? In this subject, we explore the nature and dynamics of relationships, ranging from our most intimate bonds to casual acquaintances, and from families and friends to pets and treasured possessions. The key ideas of social theorists such as Anthony Giddens and Carol Smart are examined and critiqued for what they tell us about social change and continuity across diverse sites of intimacy and relationships, including love and care, distance and loss, loneliness and connection. Students will develop their capacity for critical analysis and reflection on wide-ranging and diverse issues to do with relationships and selfhood, both within and beyond the family, and in response to new media and technologies.
